Las lecturas del año pasado.

«The Peripheral«: I was Intrigued by all the buzz around the Amazon Prime series, so I read this book before watching its adaptation. I assumed I would appreciate it more, but no, the TV series is not the book adaptation, just something based on it.
There is a lot of jargon in the book, and part of it was used in the TV show, so it was helpful to read it first, but the story is significantly different from what you see in the series. So, if you read the book, don’t expect too much of the TV show.
The book is good, no doubt about it. It’s original, but nothing completely innovative or out of this world. (Jan-Feb, 486 pp.).

«ACT.
(Feb-Mar, 127 pp.).

«Language Maid Plane«: I started reading this book last year. It took me a While to read it, not because it was difficult but because I enjoyed it. I switched back and forth between the chapters I had already read and the current advance.
I have seen illustrations of the different elements of our vocal system in several English courses in the past. To be honest, I never paid much more attention to them. It was clear to me that English pronunciation was important. Still, I never gave importance to proper pronunciation, using the right tongue position against the palate or teeth. Reading this book gave me a much more concise view of the importance of using the proper element to generate all required sounds instead of just simulating them.
(Jan-May, 206 pp.)

«Decrypter-Secret of the Lost Manuscript«:- A book I downloaded from the Kobo Store because it was free. It seems to be the first in a series of books about a character, a girl, who moves into the world of espionage and international intelligence.
It is another book for a young audience. Honestly, despite the praise I saw, I didn’t find it outstanding. What starts as a thriller ends up as one of those fantastical pseudoscientific stories. To be read once (Aug-Dec, 493 pp.).

«The Soul of a New Machine«:- This book should be an obligatory lecture for anyone dedicated to computer architecture or systems programming (maybe software development, too). This is a book that I had the opportunity to learn about many years ago through a synopsis published in the Mexican edition of Reader’s Digest.
This book relates the development of a new computer from the point of view of the people in charge of the project. It is not a technical lecture. It narrates the hard work and pros and cons that any engineer faces in a corporate environment.
To me, this book is a window into how I lived many things in my professional development. Even though I’m an informaticist and hardware is not my speciality (but computer architecture is not unknown to me), there are a lot of moments, interactions and events that are pretty familiar to me (the pressure to carry out a project against the clock, demanding and unfair bosses, a much more unfair organisation which will benefit of the final result despite the obstacles it put in front, the neglected recognize of the effort). A lot of memories were awakened by this book. A book that deserves to be read many, many times (Oct-Dec, 293 pp.).
