The best format for maximum compatibility between a Mac and a PC is FAT32. Any drive with this disk format can be easily read by Macs and Windows-based PCs.
In Mac OS X, to format an external hard drive as FAT32 follow this directions (keep in mind that by formatting your drive you will lose all your information, so backup before if there is something you want to keep of your disk drive):
- Plug in your external drive.
- Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities).
- Select your external drive.
- Click the Erase tab.
- Under Volume Format choose
MS-DOS (FAT), which is FAT32, and click Erase. - Press Erase again to confirm.
Again, be sure that you do not need any of the data on your external drive (or that it is securely backed up), since the reformatting process will completely erase the drive.
